Location
An Tigh Beag is situated in a very peaceful secluded alpine setting of lakes, waterfalls and mountains at the end of the valley. The area Glanteenassig means the "Glen of the Waterfall" and indeed, up to three waterfalls are visible at times. The cottage is fortunate to have a waterfall in full view from its doorstep. Lying under Stradbally Mountain, An Tigh Beag is about 200 meters from the entrance to the forest park. Within the forestry are three lovely lakes, some waterfalls and enchanting picnic sites. Nearby Lough Slat is a 5 min walk along a trail.
An Tigh Beag Project
The project involved the renovation of a complex of pre 1840 buildings including a traditional farm cottage and outbuildings. The finished renovation incorporates many environmentally friendly elements including renewable geothermal heating and the use of traditional materials such as hemp lime renders, thermohemp insulation and recycled timbers. The cottage is fully renovated to include all the modern comforts whilst keeping its original charm and outward appearance. The cottage is set on a 17 acre native woodland planted in 2006 beside the Owencashla River and the woodland scheme is designed to promote bio-diversity through 'close to nature' silviculture.
Hillwalking
Hiking is available literally from the front door with a huge variety to suit all grades of walker from 1 & 2 hr loops in the forest park to the well known Glanteenassig horseshoe walk (5-6 hrs). Once on to the Beenoskee range it is possible to walk on to Anascaul via the lake, to Glenahoo, to the Conor Pass and further a field to the Brandon ridge. Access to all the mountains of the Dingle peninsula is readily available by short car journey to the various start points.
Guiding, training, transport & equipment for hillwalking, climbing and kayaking is also available by prior arrangement.
OS Discovery Series Maps 70 & 71 cover entire range
